Stealth camping means parking overnight in a place where camping is not officially allowed, without drawing attention. It is a core skill for van lifers who travel through cities or stay near towns, and it is also the skill most beginners get wrong, usually by making themselves more conspicuous, not less.

The first rule of stealth camping is to arrive late and leave early. Arrive after dark when possible, park, and go straight to sleep without setting up camp. Leave in the morning before the area gets busy. A van that appears at night and disappears by morning rarely generates complaints, while a van that lingers all day invites them.

Choose locations that blend in. Residential streets with other parked cars, hotel and motel parking areas, hospital lots, and 24-hour businesses are common choices because a parked van looks normal there. Avoid schools, churches on Sunday mornings, and anywhere with no-parking signs or active enforcement, since those are where tickets happen.

Your van itself should look like a parked vehicle, not a campsite. No chairs outside, no awning out, no cooking smells drifting from an open door, and no leveling blocks or camp gear visible. Window covers should look like tinted windows from outside, not like reflective panels that scream someone is sleeping inside.

Light discipline matters more than most beginners expect. Interior lights visible through gaps in window covers are the most common giveaway at night. Use dim red lights or small battery lights, keep covers sealed, and avoid screens glowing against windows. If your van glows, it is not stealthy.

Sound discipline is equally important. Keep music low, avoid loud conversations, and silence phone notifications at night. A van that is quiet and dark is easy to ignore; a van with music and light is a reason for someone to call security or the police.

Behavior on arrival and departure counts too. Do not circle a block repeatedly looking for a spot, which draws attention from residents. Pick a spot confidently, park once, and stay put. In the morning, drive away without lingering, and never leave trash behind. One messy departure can close a spot for every van lifer who follows.

Legality varies widely and stealth camping exists in a grey area. Some cities explicitly ban overnight vehicle dwelling, others tolerate it, and enforcement varies by neighborhood and complaint. Know the local rules where you travel, and when in doubt, choose a legal option: a campground, a Walmart or business that explicitly allows overnight parking, or a friend's driveway.

Safety comes before stealth. If a spot feels unsafe, leave, even at night. Trust your instincts about neighborhoods, and keep your keys accessible so you can drive away quickly if needed. A van that is hard to leave quickly, because of gear blocking the cab, is a safety risk.

Rotate spots and never stay more than one or two nights in the same place. Regulars get noticed, and noticed vans get reported. A rotation of several spots in an area, used in no predictable pattern, keeps you under the radar far better than one perfect spot used every night.

Respect the neighborhood you are parked in. Do not use residential driveways, do not empty tanks or grey water on the street, and do not treat a parking spot as a campsite. The unwritten rule of stealth camping is simple: leave no trace that you were ever there.

Finally, remember that stealth camping is a tool, not a lifestyle requirement. Mixing stealth nights with legal campgrounds, paid sites, and stays with friends keeps the practice sustainable and stress-free. Van life works best when overnight parking is one option among many, not a nightly source of anxiety.

Done well, stealth camping is boring: you park, you sleep, you leave, and nobody notices. That boredom is the goal. The van lifers who last are not the ones with the cleverest hiding spots; they are the ones who are considerate, quiet, and gone before anyone has a reason to care.
