Winter is when off-grid solar owners discover a hard limit in their batteries. A LiFePO4 battery bank that worked perfectly all summer can refuse to charge on a freezing morning, even while the panels sit in bright sun. The reason is chemistry, and ignoring it can permanently damage an expensive battery bank.

LiFePO4 batteries store energy by moving lithium ions into the graphite structure of the negative electrode, a process called intercalation. In cold temperatures, that process slows dramatically. If charging current keeps flowing into a cold cell, the lithium ions cannot intercalate fast enough and instead pile up on the surface as metallic lithium. This is called lithium plating, and it is permanent.

Each cold-charging event permanently reduces the battery's capacity by a small amount and increases its internal resistance. Repeated events compound the damage, and in extreme cases the plated lithium can grow into dendrites that pierce the cell separator and cause an internal short. This is why the damage matters beyond a slightly weaker battery.

Quality battery management systems prevent this by blocking charging below freezing, typically at 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit. When the BMS cuts off charging, your solar array can produce power all day and none of it will enter the battery. Your home goes dark at night not because the panels failed, but because the battery protected itself.

Most standard LiFePO4 batteries specify a charging range of about 0 to 45 degrees Celsius, while discharging is allowed down to minus 20 degrees. That asymmetry confuses many owners: the battery can power your home in deep cold, but it cannot recharge until it warms up. Discharging in cold reduces usable capacity somewhat, but it does not cause plating damage.

The temperature that matters is the cell temperature, not the air temperature. A battery bank in an unheated shed can stay below freezing long after the air warms up, because the mass of the cells takes hours to follow the air. Always check the battery temperature reported by your BMS, not the weather forecast, before assuming charging is safe.

Some manufacturers allow reduced charging currents at temperatures slightly below freezing, but only when they explicitly specify it for that model. The common forum advice to just charge slowly in cold weather is a myth for most batteries: research shows plating still occurs at low currents below freezing. Never override a BMS low-temperature cutoff.

The simplest solution is insulation. An insulated battery box, especially one with the batteries grouped together so they share warmth, keeps cell temperatures higher for longer. Adding a layer of rigid foam around the box and keeping it out of wind can raise the minimum temperature by several degrees, which is often enough.

Self-heating LiFePO4 batteries solve the problem directly. These batteries contain internal heating pads that activate when charging is attempted below a threshold, warming the cells to a safe temperature before accepting charge. They cost more, but for cold climates they are often cheaper than replacing a damaged bank.

External heating pads with a thermostat are a retrofit option for existing banks. A pad under or around the batteries, controlled by a thermostat set to keep cells above 5 degrees Celsius, uses a small amount of energy but preserves the whole bank. Size the heating load into your winter energy budget so it does not surprise you.

Winter habits also help. Charge during the warmest part of the day, when the battery has had the morning sun to warm it. Avoid running the battery to a low state of charge before a cold night, since a deeply discharged battery is more vulnerable and leaves less reserve if charging is blocked the next day.

Finally, remember that lead-acid batteries behave differently: they can charge in cold, but they lose 30 to 50 percent of their capacity at freezing temperatures and a discharged lead-acid battery can actually freeze and crack. Each chemistry has a cold-weather weakness, and knowing yours is the difference between a system that survives winter and one that does not.

Cold charging is the single most expensive mistake in off-grid solar, because it damages the most expensive component silently. Check your battery temperature, respect the BMS cutoff, and invest in heating before winter arrives. Your battery bank will repay that care with years of extra life.
