Van life looks free on social media, but it has real monthly costs — and the gap between the dream and the budget is where most people quit. The good news is that van life can be cheaper than renting, often dramatically so. The honest version is that it is not free, and the costs that surprise people are rarely the van itself. Here is what a realistic monthly van life budget looks like, based on what full-time van dwellers actually spend.

Fixed costs come first. Van insurance runs $100 to $250 a month depending on the van's value and your driving record — full-timers should get a policy that covers living in the vehicle, not just driving it. A phone plan with enough data for work and navigation costs $40 to $100. If you financed the van, add the loan payment, which is often the single biggest line item. Subscriptions — streaming, software, a gym membership for showers — add another $30 to $80. Total fixed costs for most full-timers land between $300 and $700 a month.

Variable costs are where budgets swing. Fuel is the biggest variable: driving 500 miles a month at 15 miles per gallon and $3.50 a gallon costs about $115, but cross-country months can triple that. Food costs roughly what it cost in a house — $300 to $500 a month — unless you eat out constantly, which is the fastest way to blow a van budget. Campsites range from free on public land to $30 to $60 a night at private parks; mixing free dispersed camping with occasional paid sites keeps the average near $200 to $400 a month. Laundry runs $20 to $40, and propane for cooking and heating adds $20 to $60 depending on the season.

Maintenance is the cost people forget until it arrives all at once. Tyres, oil changes, brakes, and the inevitable breakdown average $100 to $200 a month when smoothed over a year — but they arrive as $800 surprises, not $150 bills. Keep a separate emergency fund of at least $2,000 before you hit the road, and top it up monthly. Older vans cost more here: a $5,000 van that needs constant repairs is often more expensive per year than a $25,000 van that just runs.

Put it together and three budgets emerge. A lean budget — mostly free camping, little driving, cooking every meal — runs $800 to $1,200 a month. A comfortable budget with regular paid sites, moderate driving, and some eating out runs $1,500 to $2,200. A fast-travel budget with daily driving and private parks runs $2,500 or more. All three beat most city rents, but none of them is zero — and the people who last in van life are the ones who budgeted for reality, not for Instagram.

A van life budget only works if income keeps pace with spending, and earning on the road is a skill in itself. Remote employment is the most stable option: if your job allows full remote work, van life is mostly a change of scenery. Freelancing — writing, design, programming, virtual assistance — offers flexibility but variable income, so build a buffer of two to three months' expenses before relying on it. Seasonal work suits the travelling life well: harvest work, ski resort jobs, national park positions, and summer camp roles all provide income plus a place to park, and many van lifers plan their year around two or three seasonal jobs. Location-independent side income — selling crafts online, tutoring, or content creation — grows slowly but compounds over time. Whatever the mix, keep your fixed costs low so a slow month is uncomfortable rather than catastrophic, and keep a separate tax and emergency fund, since van life income rarely comes with an employer's safety net. The freedom of the road is real, but it rests on the unglamorous work of earning consistently from wherever you happen to be parked.
