Solar panels produce the most power when sunlight hits them close to a right angle. Because the sun rides high in summer and low in winter, a fixed tilt is always a compromise. Adjusting tilt twice a year, steeper in winter and flatter in summer, can noticeably improve output from a small off-grid array, especially in winter when every extra watt counts and days are short.

The basic principle is simple to remember. In winter, tilt panels more steeply so they face the low sun; in summer, lay them flatter to face the high sun. As a general starting guide, many off-grid installers suggest a winter tilt roughly equal to your latitude plus fifteen degrees, and a summer tilt roughly equal to your latitude minus fifteen degrees, with a middle setting for spring and autumn. These are rules of thumb for planning, not exact figures for your roof, so treat them as a starting point and adjust from experience.

Before changing any tilt, check how your panels are mounted. Ground-mounted arrays on adjustable frames are the easiest to adjust safely. Roof-mounted panels may be fixed for wind and weather reasons, and changing them can mean working at height on a slippery surface. Never adjust panels in high wind, rain, or ice, and never work on a roof alone without proper safety equipment. If access is difficult or the mounting is not designed to move, the safer choice is to leave the tilt fixed and focus on keeping panels clean and unshaded.

Adjustment itself should be methodical. Note the current angle, loosen only the bolts the manufacturer intends you to adjust, move the panel in small steps, and tighten everything firmly before stepping away. Check that cables are not stretched, pinched, or rubbing on sharp edges after the move, and that the panel cannot swing freely in wind. Take a photo of each setting so you can return to it next season without guessing, and record the date and angle in a simple log.

Shading matters as much as tilt. A panel partly shaded by a tree, chimney, or snow can lose far more output than a slightly imperfect angle. When you adjust for winter, also check for new shadows cast by low sun angles, which reach further than summer shadows. Trim overhanging branches where safe and legal, clear snow gently with a soft brush rather than a hard scraper, and keep the area in front of ground-mounted panels clear of tall grass and stored items.

After adjusting, watch your charge controller or monitoring display for a few sunny days and compare output with similar days before the change. Weather varies, so a single cloudy day proves nothing; look for a pattern over a week. If output does not improve, check connections, cleanliness, and shading before assuming the angle is wrong. Dirty panels, loose connections, and a failing battery can all mask the benefit of a better tilt.

For many small systems, two adjustments a year are enough: one in early autumn before winter, and one in spring before summer. More frequent tweaks add little and increase wear on mounts and the risk of a loose bolt. If your system meets your needs with a fixed tilt, or if adjusting is unsafe, that is a valid choice. Seasonal tilt is an optimisation, not a requirement, and a clean, unshaded, well-maintained fixed array will outperform a poorly maintained adjustable one.

Done carefully, seasonal tilt adjustment is a low-cost way to squeeze more from panels you already own. Set a calendar reminder for spring and autumn, adjust only mounts designed to move, keep cables and bolts secure, and let a week of readings confirm the change. Combined with clean panels and clear skies, the right seasonal angle helps a small solar system carry you through the darkest months with less generator time.
